Puppet Building Exploration Day 6: (Originally Posted March 27/2021)
So, right now my sewing space looks like a flamingo molted in there and the puppet I’m working on looks like a dish mop with a hollow mouth, but that’s progress, I guess?
For the last two days of my puppet building adventure, I’m working on sewing a cloth and foam puppet. This type of hand puppet isn’t one we use often at Puppets & Shadows, but we do use it sometimes, and it’s valuable to be able to create our own characters in this style when we need to. Right now I’m working from a pattern, but I hope to get to the point where I can design my own.
I have made a few of these puppets before, but I’ve never felt like I’ve been able to get the mouth to move comfortably. My focus over the next two days is to sew a smoothly functioning puppet. Again, it will be a very plain puppet because the point of this week is function, not looks. I did, however pick a fluffy pink fabric to work with because, I gotta have some fun right?
