Puppet Exploration Day 3 (Originally Published March 24-25/2021)
It’s been a long day today in a good way.
I took a break from puppets this afternoon to take part in a workshop lead by @_clieu , hosted by @laurierwec . Everyone who tuned into the workshop was awesome and supportive which is so what I need right now. @nikeabbottand I really enjoyed it.
Then, I made prototypes of shoulder joints based on the messing around I was doing yesterday. Ball joints aren’t exactly a new invention, but my challenge is to build them so they’ll work well in the puppets I make using accessible materials, so wood, elastic, and wire. As I mentioned yesterday, this method of creating ball joints is based on one I learned at an AGO workshop a couple of years ago. It turns out it works as well for arm sockets as it does for head rotation.
Today I learned that forstner drill bits are my favourite drill bit*; the vice that my husband bought me as a surprise gift a few years ago is awesome because it has special circular grooves that hold round objects like dowels and little wooden balls still so I can drill holes in them; and I’m really starting to enjoy working with wood. Ok, that’s it, I’m going to bed.
*I see no problem with having a favourite drill bit. It’s no less arbitrary than having a favourite colour.
